In this position, at ABB Oy's division Marine & Ports in Vuosaari, Helsinki, you will be the technical lead and design authority for innovative technology developments and solutions related to Compact Azipod® products. These are gearless steerable propulsion systems where the electric drive motor is housed within a pod outside the ship hull.

Reporting to the R&D Technology Manager, you will drive excellence, making technical recommendations to ensure that R&D engineering activities are effectively executed in accordance with expectations, specifications, standards and safety requirements, while identifying improvement opportunities.

Your responsibilities:
- Ensuring reliable functional solutions for Azipod® products, including design principles and continuous performance improvement
- Managing detail design and documentation by supporting, leading and following-up the team that is under your responsibility area for a product development project
- Aligning leadership with targets and coordinating activities
- Assisting R&D Project Managers in your area of responsibility
- Continuously monitoring technology developments and ABB products and technologies, and identifying technical drivers for R&D projects
- Active participating in networks to expand knowledge of the targeted area of expertise
- Identifying and managing risks in R&D projects

Your background:
- A Bachelor's or Master's degree in a Mechanical Engineering
- Several years of experience in Mechanical Engineering working at least in an R&D Engineer role with relevant industry, preferably heavy industry
- Experience in the marine industry is appreciated; knowledge of steel structures, shafting, cooling systems and electric power transmission is an advantage
- Sound knowledge of project management and engineering techniques including 3D engineering systems. Knowledge of NX and TeamCenter is an advantage
- A high level of self-motivation, curiosity and desire to learn about new technologies
- A collaborative, solutions-oriented approach with strong written and spoken communication skills
- Good written and spoken communication English skills
